New Construction/Upgrades

Members planning new construction, service upgrades, or service removals are advised to contact Decatur County REMC before starting. Please complete the form below and a representative will be in contact with you.

New Services

If you are planning new construction, you need to complete the New Service form above or call the office at (812) 663-3391.

Process

In general, the following things must happen before a project can be placed in the queue for construction.

  • The applicant must become a member of Decatur County REMC.
  • An easement must be on file for all affected properties.
  • A line extension agreement must be signed and paid for (if applicable).
  • Service entrance equipment set and inspected (if permanent service).
  • Any tree or construction path clearing must be completed by the member.
Membership

Applicants are required to be a member of our co-op before we can begin any construction. For more information on establishing new service, visit the Establish New Service page.

Utility Easement

We are required to have an easement on file for the property before we can begin construction. All parties listed on the Deed are required to have a notarized signature. To obtain an easement: complete the form below and return with a copy of the recorded deed.

Line Extensions

When building your home, you may be asked to pay for or contribute to the cost of providing the service. Members are not required to pay for low voltage facilities as it is included in the base rate. If high voltage facilities are required to be extended, the member will be required to sign the line extension agreement and make full payment before construction can be scheduled. The general rule of thumb for low voltage installations are 200’ from an existing primary pole or pad mounted transformer for 200 amp services and 250’ for 400 amp installations. Decatur County REMC does reserve the right to determine a meter location. Our current line extension policy can be found in Rule 25 in the Rules and Regulations page.

Upgrade Service

Members planning on upgrading an existing service or converting a service to underground, or a combination of both, are required to reach out to DCREMC by completing the Upgrade Service form above or calling us at (812) 663-3391.

Important Note: Service entrance equipment will be required to be inspected by the local municipality for any major changes. Contact your local building inspector to see if an inspection is required or not.

Residential Upgrades/Modifications

Upgrading an existing service or converting a service to underground, or a combination of both, can result in various paperwork items needing to be completed prior to construction taking place. In some instances, a contribution in aid may be required to be paid. The general process follows the same steps as the new construction. A permit and inspection will be required for all meter base upgrades. This can be completed the same day as the switchover or at a different day, but electric will not be re-energized until the service entrance equipment passes inspection.

General Information

Service Entrance Equipment

DCREMC requires service entrance equipment to be installed and inspected (if necessary) for new services and service upgrades before construction can begin. DCREMC has 200 amp and 400 amp meter bases without integrated disconnects available at our office for no charge as long as they are installed in our service territory. The member is responsible for installing the meter base and any other required service entrance equipment (disconnects, transfer switches, breaker panels, etc.). Note that meter bases with integrated disconnects are allowed but they must be furnished by the member. Typically, the local municipality requires an inspection before we can energize a new service or service upgrade. Please check with your local building department to see if an inspection is required. Temporary meter bases for construction power are not required to be inspected.

Important Note: DCREMC reserves the right to refuse service to any service entrance equipment that is not built satisfactorily or when a blatant safety hazard is present. DCREMC reserves the right to determine the location of a meter. DCREMC no longer allows for member owned equipment (meter bases, disconnects, risers, etc.) to be installed on our poles. Members are allowed to have a meter pole, but they must own the pole.

Scheduling Construction

Once all paperwork is completed and the meter set up has passed inspection will the project be released to construction. We are dependent on weather and contractor availability. Lead times can vary greatly. Typically we are very busy in the spring and fall so plan accordingly.

Important Note: Projects will NOT be placed in the construction queue until all paperwork is completed, payment is made in full (if required), and the service entrance equipment is installed to satisfaction/passed inspection.

Construction Notes

DCREMC strives to complete projects in a professional manner and cause as minimal disruption as possible. However, we do not provide remedial work, such as landscaping, smoothing out ruts, re-seeding/straw, etc. This will be the responsibility of the member. The member is responsible for providing DCREMC a path clear of trees for 30’ for all overhead high voltage installations and a path of 15’ for all underground installations (High voltage and low voltage facilities). DCREMC reserves the right to determine the path for installations.

Permits

Often times a building permit and inspection is required before we are allowed to connect a new service or a service upgrade. This is required by the following judiciaries. In some instances, we are able to complete our work the same day as the inspection. This needs to be scheduled with DCREMC and the inspector.

  • City of Greensburg: Greensburg Building, Planning, and Zoning
  • Decatur County: Decatur County Plan Commission
  • Ripley County: Ripley County Building Department
  • Jennings County: Jennings County Area Planning
  • Franklin County: Franklin County Area Planning, Zoning, & Building Department

Standard Details

The following are standard details that provide a guide on how to build an acceptable metering structure. Modifications may be necessary to fit your individual circumstances. These details can typically be installed on a structure (house, barn, etc.) or different materials may be used instead of wood (vinyl, steel, etc.). Disconnect switches or transfer switches may not be required in all situations. Check with your local building inspector to see what they require.
