Greensburg Enterprise Park Identified as Candidate for Economic Development Opportunity

City of GreensburgGreensburg, IN. - Recently, Decatur County REMC and the Greensburg Decatur County Economic Development Corporation hosted representatives from leading data center site location advisors, Biggins Lacy Shapiro (BLS), to review the Business Enterprise Park off of I-74 Frontage Road as a potential “Data Center Ready” accredited site through the Hoosier Energy Data Center Identification Program. This evaluation follows recent Indiana legislation to further the state as a top destination for data center development.

The Business Enterprise Park was chosen for further evaluation from among 20 Southern Indiana and South Central Indiana sites. BLS reviewed and ranked each by ideal data center qualities such as the size of the site, power available and access to broadband.

This selection led to last week’s field review of the site, along with meetings with landowners, and local government officials. BLS will now review additional information gathered onsite to determine whether Business Enterprise Park is eligible for full accreditation, a gold standard in the data center industry.

Economic Development Corporation of Greensburg/Decatur County Director Bryan Robbins is excited at the site and certification’s prospects: “This is a great example of many entities working together over a long period to enhance opportunities for diversifying our local economy. The need for data centers continues to grow now and will only increase in the future, and we’re happy that Decatur County can be at the forefront.”

Decatur County REMC CEO, Brett Abplanalp attributes this opportunity to the strong partnerships they’ve built with the Economic Development Corporation of Greensburg/Decatur County and Hoosier Energy. “Thanks to the diligent and proactive efforts of our power provider, Hoosier Energy, and our local EDC director, Bryan Robbins, the Greensburg Business Enterprise Park has been identified as a preferred development site for a data center,” says Abplanalp. He added, “This is an exciting opportunity for potential growth of our cooperative and community. A data center site will have major economic, education, and social impacts. We are fortunate to have such strong economic development partnerships and support from our community and power provider.”

Earlier this year, Hoosier Energy announced a program for member cooperatives, including Decatur County REMC, to take advantage of newly enacted Indiana legislation making the state a top data center development destination. 20 sites were submitted from the Hoosier Energy service territory encompassing a 59-county region across southern Indiana and parts of southeastern Illinois.
